Why Offsite Editing?

Having the editor on our servers is a big part of our product strategy. It enables us to offer enhanced services and features, keep your product always up-to-date, provide secure environment, but most of all, provide consistent service to all users.

We've taken extra effort to build Bildy around infrastructure that scales and holds. Bildy runs on the same system as many of most popular sites on the web and we're continuing to improve the reliability and stability of the service.

That said, Bildy sites are in no way dependent on our servers. This isn't "hosted cms" solution, where you have very limited access and control to your web space (so bad, so wrong). Even if we cease to exist, your web service will continue running -with all it's data and functionality- as if nothing's happened. In that case, we will open-source Bildy editor and provide it free for all of our clients —as you've surely read from the TOS ;)

We initially designed Bildy like this, because we believe that combining your's and our's servers for creating your web service, will lead to many really cool things. Many of which we'll see more down the line.

One really nice advantage is single sign on to all of your Bildy projects. I admit, this will become apparent only when you start having multiple Bildy sites.

I bumped into a discussion on how to make same login work on multiple Wordpress sites. It was possible, but the developer had to hack the login system.

When you have single point of access, like in Bildy, it's possible to jump between projects with a single click. As developers, we know it's common to work on more than one project during the day. Break your workflow to tweak something and then jump back to the real deal. In such cases, feature like this makes a big difference.

While I understand the reasoning behind hosting the editor on your servers, and the advantages of a single sign on for all websites, I think there is definitely a valid concern of owning and usability. What happens if your servers go down and a developer/user can't access the editor to make changes? Or what happens if a developer really wants to customize the login and editor features for their client to match the client's brand? Maybe there's an answer to the second but the first (accessibility) would definitely a big concern for many developers out there since having the editor hosted away from the site takes away a big element of control away from the developer/site owner.

Wouldn't there be some merit to having an editor hosted on the site itself with the ability to update when the asti hosted editor gets updated? Then the developer would have the choice to take advantage of the remotely hosted single sign-on editor when they wanted to or use the self-hosted editor when desired. With the cost factor thrown in, I think this would be a reasonable expectation.

einsteinsboi’s concerns are truly valid and they touch every SaaS and PaaS product. In the end, it’s a question of trust –something you have to build and earn over time.

To do that, we’ve invested a lot in creating secure and stable infrastructure to ensure maximum uptime for the service. Because most of our users pay for Bildy every month, we have to be able to stand behind our promise all the time. If we would get our revenue from something else (say consulting or related products), being able to access the product wouldn’t be so crucially important to us. So we take usability (meaning both uptime and ease-of-use) really seriously.

But yes, there is always the risk. Just like Google’s services are sometimes down, so can Bildy be. Luckily updating your site isn’t as mission critical as many other SaaS product (think about project management or CRM). Still, this doesn’t make any less important.

Everything to run and manage your site is on your server, even all the codes that Bildy editor uses to do all it’s tricks. With the PHP API, it’s possible to create your own editor for managing the site. This could be the fall-back solution you’re looking for. It’s something we’ve talked about, but it isn’t on our to-do list. If you’re interested in building that, we’d be glad to help you and give you all the info you need.

Bildy isn’t just an editor you pay for. We provide a service that includes supporting and helping you in all your endeavors. You’re never left alone wondering. How you succeed in your work is our main focus, because in the end, that’s how you judge Bildy. If your opinion wouldn’t mean so much to our business, we wouldn’t be so concerned about providing you the best possible experience —always.

And this brings us back to our product strategy. We understand the concerns of ownership and control. That’s why everything but the UI is on your server. Different approaches have different tradeoffs, but we believe that following this path we can best provide you what we think is most important. Yes, this is a different way of doing things —and that’s the point! Just like we urge you to do, we’ve created something really unique in order to provide something that others don’t. It might not work for everyone, but for many it really hits the spot.
